In 2024, the University of Minnesota Twin Cities achieved 9,864,660 kilowatt hours in electricity savings, surpassing the highest level of conservation goal set by Xcel Energy. That’s enough electricity to power 1,100 average Minnesota homes for a year and avoid 7.6 million pounds of CO2 emissions. This achievement will result in significant cost reductions and environmental benefits.
The Minnesota Legislature has deemed energy efficiency important for decades as it helps keep energy costs lower, avoid construction of power plants, and reduce pollution. Legislation states that in order to receive state funding for buildings, both existing and new, the University must meet energy efficiency standards. Utilities, like Xcel Energy, also have certain energy efficiency goals required by the state. Our campus and other major utility customers are offered incentives, in the form of rebates, to help them reach that energy savings goal.
As a result of our efforts through energy projects on campus, the University received $724,815 in rebates, plus an additional $147,246 for reaching our goal—bringing the total incentives from Xcel to $872,061 in 2024.
Energy Management and supporting work on energy efficiency allows the University to reduce costs, achieve our sustainability goals, and continue to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This rebate ultimately goes back into a cycle within the University, allowing us to continue investing in energy reduction and working to reduce our energy use. Energy saved is energy the institution doesn’t have to purchase, which contributes to keeping tuition costs down for students in addition to benefiting the environment.
Each year, energy savings become more difficult to find because a lot has already been reduced, so Energy Management staff find creative ways to continue saving energy through various projects across campus. The pie chart below highlights where these savings came from with Lighting (35%) and HVAC (24%) contributing the most.
Thanks to Energy Management and all who support these efforts!
