University of Minnesota Places First in Two Categories in US Sustainability Rankings
the University of Minnesota's 2025 Times Higher Education rankings are highlighted here including work in clean water and health and wellbeing

The 2025 Times Higher Ed Sustainability Impact rankings evaluated 2,526 universities from 130 countries/regions, comparing their efforts to conduct teaching, research, outreach and stewardship that support a more sustainable, equitable and healthy future. The University was fifth in the U.S. overall and in the top 10% worldwide.

The University of Minnesota ranked among the top five in the U.S. for its work related to:

  • Clean water (No. 1 in the U.S., Tied for No. 16 in the world)
  • Health and well-being (No. 1 in the U.S., Tied for No. 54 in the world)
  • Climate action (No. 3 in the U.S., Tied for No. 70 in the world)
  • Zero hunger (No. 4 in the U.S., No. 34 in the world)
  • Partnerships for the Goals (No. 3 in the U.S.)

The Office of Sustainability and Parking and Transportation Services launched our new hybrid electric buses with fall festivities! You will see three of the hybrid electric buses around campus currently, with five more coming this winter. We are always working to lower emissions as part of our Climate Action Plan. ๐Ÿ”‹๐Ÿ”Œ These buses are about three to four times more efficient overall than the standard campus buses. They use EV mode in more congested areas on campus and they recharge with regenerative braking between Minneapolis and St. Paul campuses and in less congested areas. Two Spring Break study abroad programs are now open for students interested in sustainability and global health. Spend March 6โ€“15, 2026 exploring Green Chemistry in Guatemala or The Intersection of Health and the Environment in Ecuador. Both programs connect to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and include an on-campus course. Apply by December 1, 2025, with a $1,000 fee reduction for the first 10 confirmed students per program.
