The University of Minnesota's Climate Action Plan (CAP) solar projects were recognized as Project of the Year by the Minnesota Solar Energy Industries Association (MnSEIA) on Sept. 30, 2026.
The recognition comes as the University works to expand on-campus solar energy through seven new installations on the Twin Cities campus, including five rooftops and two surface parking lots. Together, these projects will add approximately 4 megawatts (MW) of solar capacity, nearly tripling the campus's total capacity to more than 6 MW.
The expansion, led by Energy Management and Capital Project Management, supports the University's Climate Action Plan (CAP) goals of reaching 6 MW of on-campus solar capacity by 2033 and 12 MW by 2050.
Construction began with a groundbreaking ceremony at Lot 37 on July 15, 2026, marking the first of seven planned installations. The project represents a significant investment in renewable energy infrastructure and supports the University's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The MnSEIA recognition highlights the University's continued progress toward its renewable energy and climate action goals.
